Jamshedpur: Gangster Akhi-lesh Singh and wife Garima were sent to two days' police custody by a court here on Friday evening.
Earlier in the day, the couple were produced before the court of first class judicial magistrate Pragya Bajpai in connection with a cheating case (involving a residential flat) registered with Birsanagar police station earlier this year.
The gangster, who is wanted in over 50 cases of murder and extortion, and his wife were brought to the court at 11.30am from Jugsalai thana under tight security.
Wheelchair-bound Akhi-lesh was later taken to MGM Medical College and Hospital for a check-up of his injured knee before being sent to Jugsalai thana.
While the defence pleaded for better treatment of Akhilesh, the prosecution had sought a 10-day police remand.
The duo were brought to the city from Gurgaon on Thursday on transit remand.
Akhilesh was arrested by Jharkhand and Haryana police following an encounter at a Gurgaon guesthouse on October 12.
The 39-year-old son of a former cop from Jamshedpur had sustained bullet wounds on both legs in retaliatory fire and has been admitted to hospital. Garima, against whom a cheating case is pending in Gurgaon, was also arrested the same day. They were later sent to Bhondsi jail in Haryana.
Jamshedpur police had obtained a production warrant against Akhilesh from the court here after he was arrested.
SP (city) Prashant Anand said they had prayed for a 10-day remand. "We would interrogate Akhilesh in all the cases, including transporter Upender Singh and his aide Amit Rai's murder once the remand was granted. We would also quiz him about the scrap iron syndicate, his crime network and connections with some local people," he added.
