Around 9,000 of the 50,000-odd students who had appeared for Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Mains from Jharkhand this year have qualified for JEE Advanced, the final gateway to the IITs, NITs and some other premier engineering institutes of the country.
The result of JEE Mains, which was conducted in both online and offline versions by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) earlier this month, was announced on Monday. Although the result was supposed to be available online in the morning, it was announced on the Internet around 4pm, keeping students on tenterhooks all day.
Candidates, who finally checked their results on the JEE Mains website said they received marks out of a total of 360 with a mention of whether they were eligible for JEE Advanced that will be held on May 24.
This year, the CBSE also mentioned the subject break-ups.
The cut-off for general students this year is 105 out of 360 while the figure for 2014 was 115. For OBCs, the minimum marks for qualifying for JEE Advanced is 70. The SC/ST candidates required 50 and 44, respectively.
From Ranchi, around 10,000 took the exam, of whom, 1,200-1,500 have qualified.
Three students of Jawahar Vidya Mandir, Shyamali, bagged the first three positions in the state. P.N. Aditya, Pranjal Prasoon and Shashank Shekhar have scored 314, 311 and 305, respectively.
"The Internet crashed due to which many couldn't check their results. We are still filtering the results," said Ravi Shekhar, director of Edutech, a coaching centre.
In Jamshedpur, out of the 8,000-odd examinees, around 2,000 have made the cut.
Akash Kumar Dutta, a student of Jamshedpur Public School, was among the highest scorers. He notched 300.
"My score is below expectation. I expected somewhere around 320-340. I scored less in physics, which did the damage," Dutta rued.
Owners of various centres guiding students on JEE preparation said they were still in the process of analysing the students' performance.
"Everything will become clear gradually as we understand the process. We are still downloading the results and we yet to analyse the same. As of now, the eligibility for JEE Advanced will be only the JEE Mains scores. I guess the low cut-off fixed by the CBSE this year has helped many students," said Pramod Dubey, director of Prerna Classes, a leading coaching centre in the steel city.
In Bokaro, more than a thousand students have qualified for JEE Advanced with the lion's share being from DPS-Bokaro, Chinmaya School, Pentecostal Assembly School, St Xavier's School, Ayappa School, GGPS, MGM, DAV, Holy Cross, Sardar Patel, SVM School and others.
