Dhanbad, Sept. 21: A gang of about 10 robbers looted valuables worth Rs 1 lakh, including cash and cellphones, from passengers on the 2873 Ranchi-New Delhi Jharkhand Swarna Jayanti Express around 9 last night near Daltongunj.
The superintendent of rail police Shashinath Jha said that a case, numbered 37/07, has been registered on the statement of a victim with the Daltongunj rail police station today under section 395 of Indian Penal Code. According to the complainant, Mrityunjay Kumar, the son of Moti Prasad of Deo district in Aurangabad, the robbers, about 10 in number, boarded a general compartment second from the engine between Rajhara and Kajrihat, about 20km from Ranchi near pole number 258/3, dressed as ordinary passengers after the train left from Daltongunj at 9pm.
After a few minutes they used knives and country-made revolvers to threaten the passengers to hand over their possessions. They collected cash worth Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000, some jewellery from women and a Nokia handset from the complainant and got down after Kajrihat and fled towards north. Some passengers were also reportedly hurt while trying to oppose the robbery. But senior GRP officials said that no one was seriously injured.
The Daltongunj GRP inspector is leading the GRP team and the deputy superintendent of railway police, Lalbahadur Mishra, is supervising the case.
Jha has also left for the spot by Shaktipunj Express to take a stock of the situation. He said that the Jharkhand Swarna Jayanti Express was also a target of robbers earlier.
Robberies have taken place both in the Up and Down trains. It occurs generally when the train leaves late from Ranchi for Delhi and when the Down train from Delhi arrives late to Ranchi.
