Chennai: Tamil superstar Rajinikanth on Wednesday sought the cooperation of the people of neighbouring Karnataka for the smooth release of his film Kaala, which is set to hit the screens on Thursday.

"I have not made any mistake. Please do not disturb those who want to watch the movie. I request your cooperation," he said in Kannada outside his Poes Garden home.

The 67-year-old actor expressed hope that Karnataka chief minister H.D. Kumaraswamy would take all necessary steps to ensure the film's release on Thursday in keeping with a Karnataka High Court order.

"I want to tell those who are protesting against the release of the movie that I had asked Karnataka to abide by the Cauvery Water Management Board, which is a Supreme Court ruling. I don't know what is wrong in it," Rajini said.

"I also said dams must be administered by the board," he said, adding the efforts to stall the release of the film "do not seem right".

It is "surprising" to know that the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) is also part of those who are trying to stop the film from releasing in the state, Rajini said.

Miffed with Rajinikanth's comments that whichever government comes to power in Karnataka should implement the Supreme Court order on Cauvery water-sharing, the KFCC on May 29 decided not to allow the screening of Kaala.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to stall the release of the film. The stay had been sought by one K. Rajashekaran alias K.S. Nagaraja, who had claimed that the movie was a plagiarised version of his own yet-to-be made movie. PTI"We cannot pass any injunction at this stage when the movie is being released tomorrow. People must be waiting for the movie," the bench of Justices A.K. Goel and Ashok Bhushan said. The court orally said Rajashekaran was free to pursue other legal remedies under the Copyright Act.
