Darjeeling, July 9 :
Thousands of people today turned up to give a hero?s welcome to the body of rifleman Arun Kumar Rai of 1/11 Gorkha Rifles, though two other Gorkha soldiers who died alongside him may remain unsung in their homeland Nepal forever.
Arun laid down his life for his India, and the others, who hailed from Nepal, sacrificed their lives for their mitra rashtra ? India.
Army and civil authorities, waiting to receive Arun?s mortal remains at Bagdogra did not have any clue about the nationality of the 3 soldiers from Gorkha Rifles who died in the Batalik sector last weekend.
The only source to ascertain their identity was rifleman Anil Tamang who accompanied Arun?s body from Batalik.
?The three died while chasing Pakistani intruders in Batalik,? he said. He identified one of them as Sudhir Janak Rai.
Nepalese officials at the border were also in the dark about the number of fallen Nepali Gorkhas. They also did not visit the 15 Nepalese Gorkhas from 4/5 Gorkha Rifles injured in the explosion at New Jalpaiguri station last month, either.
A Nepalese official said: ?We cannot display the same kind
of emotion on the Nepali-speaking people in Darjeeling and other parts of India as we are not directly involved in the war with
Pakistan.?
Nepalese Gorkhas have been serving the Indian army for over a century-and-a-half. Despite the death of these soldiers, hundreds of Nepalese youth are swarming into different recruitment centres to join the army.
A wave of patriotism swept the hills when Arun?s body arrived at the airport this morning.
