New Delhi, July 7: The Supreme Court today refused to stay Lt. Gen. Dalbir Singh Suhag’s elevation as army chief from next month.
“There is no reason why we should stay. Let the matter come in the normal course, we will hear it,” a bench headed by Justice T.S. Thakur said, declining to entertain a plea for the stay. The court said it would hear the plea by Lt. Gen. Ravi Dastane, who has challenged Suhag’s appointment, in the second week of September. Suhag is due to take charge on August 1.
Beijing (PTI): India inaugurated its biggest yoga summit in China on Monday. Around 1,500 yoga practitioners participated in the event. The six-day summit is taking place at Yunnan Province’s Dali city.
Jabalpur (PTI): Madhya Pradesh High Court has dismissed a “letter petition” filed by Congress leader Digvijaya Singh seeking a CBI probe into an exam scandal in the state. Dismissing his request to treat the letter as a PIL, the court said: “Courts are not arenas for political wrestling.”
New Delhi (PTI): Thai Airways International Limited has been directed by the apex consumer commission to pay Rs 11 lakh to an export firm for “deficiency” in service while delivering goods to Myanmar in 2008. The airline was held guilty of handling over the airways bill to the buyer instead of the consignee.
Ahmedabad (PTI): Domestic violence is on a rise in Gujarat with 7,812 cases registered last year, an increase of 1,154, according to the National Crime Records Bureau. Gujarat ranks seventh in the number of such cases being registered and 25th in terms of conviction with a conviction rate of 2.30 per cent.
Panaji (PTI): Goa’s tourism industry recorded a 12.5 per cent rise in domestic tourist arrivals last year, its highest rate of growth, a senior official said. Over 26 lakh Indians visited the state in 2013, Pamela Mascarenhas, deputy director of tourism department, said.

New Delhi (PTI): The government may impose an anti-dumping duty of up to $2,042 (Rs 1.2 lakh) per tonne on Chinese electrical insulators to protect domestic players from cheap imports. The directorate general of anti-dumping and allied duties has said the insulators have been exported from China below the normal cost.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has sought the responses of the Centre and states on a PIL seeking a ban or regulation of battery-operated e-rickshaws. Calcutta-based Bibhash Karmakar has said in his PIL that the e-rickshaws are being run without any rules and regulations and sought a CBI inquiry into their spurt.
