Aizawl, July 18 :     The Mizoram government has beefed up security in the state to prevent militant outfits from using its territory as a corridor to Bangladesh and Myanmar. Home minister Tawnluia told The Telegraph that rebel outfits from Assam, Manipur and Nagaland were smuggling in arms and ammunition through the state?s borders with Bangladesh and Myanmar. Tawnluia, who headed the armed wing of the Mizo National Front for eight years, said the Zoramthanga government decided to beef up security after the People?s Revolutionary Army of Kangleipak killed five policemen a couple of months back. ?Our main aim is to safeguard Indian territory. So we cannot allow any anti-India activity to take place in our territory,? Tawnluia said. The home minister said Mizoram Armed Police jawans arrested a hardcore Bangladesh-based militant at Zarzoliana earlier this month. Security forces also arrested two Naga militants and seized some weapons when they were trying to sneak into Bangladesh. ?We have submitted a proposal to the Union home ministry underscoring the need to raise more battalions of the Mizoram Armed Police and form a border infiltration prevention force,? the home minister said. The Mizoram government has also asked the Centre to provide ?additional funds? for modernisation of its police force. ?If the Centre can give so much of money to Assam, Nagaland and Manipur to maintain law and order, why shouldn?t funds be released to maintain peace in Mizoram?? Tawnluia wondered. The minister said the Centre recently allotted 40 Maruti Gypsies to improve patrolling in the interior areas of the state, but that was not enough.
