New Delhi, July 21 :
Tara Bhattacharji, grand daughter of Mahatma Gandhi and C. Rajagopalachari, today joined the Congress.
Bhattacharji, a member of All India Khadi and Village Development Industries Commission, said she had joined the Congress to fight communal forces. The Congress was the only secular and progressive party to lead the nation, she said.
Later she called on party chief Sonia Gandhi.

Tara?s father Devdas Gandhi was a renowned journalist and a former editor of The Hindustan Times. Sumitra is the daughter of Ramdas Gandhi, the third son of Mahatma Gandhi.
Tara is a sister of journalist and author Rajmohan Gandhi and related to C. Rajagopalachari from her mother?s side.
Kids not to greet VIPs
Hyderabad: The days of government and convent school children baking under the sun as ego-massaging greeting parties for VIPs and foreign guests may be over if a Union education ministry guideline is adopted by states. The ministry has issued the guidelines to educational institutions to prevent children from being used as ?free crowds?.
It has told the National Human Rights Commission it will also prescribe separate circulars on the issue. However, these can only be advisory as education is on the concurrent list of the Constitution.
According to sources in the education ministry the guidelines forbid the school authorities from sending the children on long distances for greeting VIPs.
