Bangalore: A Dubai-based Indian lawyer on Tuesday claimed that Kerala CPM leader Kodiyeri Balakrishnan's younger son Bineesh Kodiyeri was a wanted man in the emirate, in what seems like double trouble for the powerful Marxist.

Aji Kuriakose told The Telegraph he had checked prosecution records and could confirm that Bineesh had been sentenced to jail in one of the several cases against him.

Contacted by this newspaper, Bineesh said: "I left Dubai in 2013, so I don't know about any case."

On Monday night, a Congress-backed Malayalam channel had broadcast a report on the jail sentence.

Bineesh, who had left Dubai for India in 2013, has pleaded ignorance about the cases and the conviction but not issued a denial.

Kuriakose's claim comes at a time Bineesh's elder brother Binoy Kodiyeri is stranded in Dubai following a travel ban.

A Dubai court had issued the travel ban on February 1 after Binoy landed there, following a complaint by UAE businessman Hasan Ismaeel Abdulla Almarzooqi that the Indian owed him AED 1 million (Rs 1.72 crore).

Kuriakose said Bineesh was embroiled in three cases. "Bineesh was sentenced to two months in jail on December 10 (2017) for not clearing an AED 2.25 lakh loan," the lawyer said. The second case involved an AED 60,000 loan he owed to First Gulf Bank, which had filed a case in 2016. The prosecution later ordered Bineesh to pay a penalty of AED 3,000, although he had left Dubai.

"When I checked yesterday (Monday) morning, the penalty of AED 3,000 was still pending. But by evening, someone named Anas had paid it," Kuriakose said.

The third case is linked to credit card dues of AED 30,000 Bineesh allegedly owed to Majid Al Futtaim Finance. The case was filed last year and has since been pending with the public prosecutor.

Bineesh said he was aware of the news report carried by Jaihind TV, a Congress-backed channel. "I don't know if there were any pending credit card payments. I will have to check in Dubai."

Told he faced a jail sentence, Bineesh said: "I will anyway check the veracity of all this and let you know."
