Mumbai, June 27 (PTI): Indrani Mukerjea, the prime accused in the Sheena Bora murder case who has been booked for rioting in a women's jail here along with other inmates, today moved court alleging that she was beaten up by prison officials after the death of a convict sparked a protest.
Taking note of her complaint, a CBI court that is hearing the Sheena murder case directed the authorities of Byculla jail to produce Indrani before it tomorrow.
The former media executive's lawyer, Gunjan Mangla, filed an application in the court saying when she went to meet Indrani, the latter told her that she had been beaten up by jail officials after the death of the prisoner.
"She showed me her bruise marks and injuries, which were very prominent on her hands, legs and head," Gunjan claimed in the application.
Gunjan said Indrani, the estranged wife of former media baron Peter Mukerjea, also told her that she was verbally abused by the jail superintendent and other officials and was threatened with sexual assault for protesting against the death in the jail.
Following the death of Manju Govind Shette on Friday, many inmates had protested on Saturday. Some of them had gone up to the prison's terrace while others had set newspapers and documents on fire.
The police booked nearly 200 inmates of the jail, including Indrani, for rioting, unlawful assembly, assault on a public servant and other sections of the IPC.
Gunjan said Indrani had requested her to bring the incident to the court's notice and seek her production so that she could lodge a complaint against the jail officials.
"She informed me that several inmates wanted to give their statements against the jail officials who were involved in the incident," the lawyer said.
When judge J.C. Jagdale asked Gunjan if Indrani wanted to file an FIR, the lawyer said "yes".
A prison department official had alleged that Indrani "instigated" the inmates by asking them to shun food and "use their children as shields" when prison staffers tried to stop them from gathering together and agitating.
The police today said Manju, whose death sparked the prison protests, had allegedly been tortured and a stick inserted into her private parts.
Manju, 45, died at the government-run JJ Hospital on Friday night after allegedly being beaten up by a woman official of the jail on June 23.
"These allegations are part of the FIR filed against the jail staff. We are probing the matter," deputy commissioner of police Akhilesh Singh said.
The police have lodged a murder case against the jail staff. "We are seeking information from eyewitnesses and other inmates," a police officer said.
