Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday embarked on a tour of Japan, Papua New Guinea and Australia to attend three key multilateral summits including that of the G7 grouping and Quad.

"PM @narendramodi embarks on a visit to Japan, Papua New Guinea & Australia.

First leg of the visit takes him to Japan for the @G7 Summit. An opportunity to engage with important partners in multilateral and bilateral formats," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi tweeted.

Senior diplomats of India and Ukraine are exploring the possibility of a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the G7 summit.

Kiren Rijiju on Friday assumed charge as Earth Sciences Minister and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for giving him an opportunity to handle various portfolios.

"Don't ask questions related to the previous ministry as they are no longer relevant," Rijiju said to questions whether he was removed as Law Minister for his frequent run-ins with the judiciary.

An expert committee appointed by the Supreme Court said it cannot conclude any regulatory failure around Adani Group's stock rallies, and that Sebi has "drawn a blank" in its probe into alleged violations in money flows from offshore entities into the conglomerate.

"At this stage, taking into account the explanations provided by Sebi, supported by empirical data, prima facie, it would not be possible for the committee to conclude that there has been a regulatory failure around the allegation of price manipulation," the panel said in the report submitted to the Supreme Court.

Karnataka chief minister-designate Siddaramaiah and his deputy DK Shivakumar arrived here on Friday to discuss with the party's high command the names of ministers to be inducted into the new cabinet and the allocation of portfolios.

"We want to invite our leaders, we want to invite Rahul ji, Sonia ji, Kharge ji and Priyanka ji for the ceremony. They gave their sweat, direction (to the campaign), so I wanted to invite them personally. Later, we are discussing the cabinet formation," Shivakumar told reporters after arriving here.

The Supreme Court on Friday deferred the scientific survey, including carbon dating, to determine the age of "Shivling" which was said to have been found at the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi.

A bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud issued notices to the Centre, the Uttar Pradesh government and the Hindu petitioners on the mosque panel's plea against the high court order for the scientific survey and carbon dating of "Shivling".

TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee, who has been called by the CBI to appear at its Kolkata office on Saturday as part of its probe into the school jobs scam, has decided to suspend his mass outreach campaign temporarily to join the probe.

"I am returning to Calcutta tonight, as there has been a development," Abhishek Banerjee confirmed to reporters.

"Abhishek Banerjee will appear at CBI’s office at Nizam Palace at 11 am. He will be doing one event in Bankura and then leave for Kolkata," a TMC leader said.

The Supreme Court on Friday directed the Bihar government to produce complete original records with regard to the remission granted to former MP Anand Mohan, who was serving life term in the 1994 murder case of then Gopalganj District Magistrate G Krishnaiah.

"Original records with regard to remission to respondent-4 (Anand Mohan) by order dated April 10, 2023, be placed before the court", the bench said, adding that records with regard to criminal antecedents be also placed before it.

Salman Rushdie walked onstage at PEN America’s annual gala Thursday night, his first public appearance since he was stabbed and gravely wounded in an attack in August at a literary event in western New York.

“Well, hi everybody,” Rushdie said, as the crowd at the American Museum of Natural History in Manhattan greeted him with whoops and a standing ovation. “It’s nice to be back — as opposed to not being back, which was also an option. I’m pretty glad the dice rolled this way.”

Indiana Jones and Harrison Ford swung into Cannes for the world premiere of "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" in one of the most anticipated events of the French Riviera festival.

"A great part of my life, not all of my life," Ford continued, thanking Flockhart as well as "Dial of Destiny" director James Mangold and co-star Phoebe Waller-Bridge.It's not the first "Indiana Jones" film to premiere in Cannes. The fourth installment, "Indiana and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" launched at the 2008 edition of the festival.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and wife Akshata Murty, who made their UK rich list debut last year, lost around GBP 201 million since then as a result of a drop in the value of Murty’s shares in Infosys, according to a media report on Friday.

“The couple’s most valuable asset has long been a shareholding in Infosys, an Indian IT giant set up by Murty’s father,” the rich list analysis said. “Over the past year, their wealth has fallen by more than half a million pounds a day. When the pair made their debut on the Rich List 12 months ago, this stake was worth about GBP 690 million. Since then Infosys’ shares have plummeted owing to lower revenues from its banking, tech and other clients,” it noted.
