Haryana minister Sandeep Singh, who has been booked in a sexual harassment case, on Sunday gave up his sports portfolio, saying he has taken this step on moral grounds.

The development comes a day after the case was registered against him by the Chandigarh Police on a complaint of a woman junior athletics coach from the state.

One person was killed and 14 others injured in a fire which broke out after a blast in a boiler at a chemical company in Maharashtra's Nashik district on Sunday, officials said.

The blast was so strong that it was heard in nearby villages. The fire and smoke could be seen from a distance.

A large number of political leaders and well-wishers attended a prayer meet organised in the memory of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's mother Hiraben at the PM's birthplace Vadnagar in Gujarat on Sunday.

Hiraben passed away at 99 in Ahmedabad on Friday.

West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamul Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee on Sunday congratulated TMC workers on the party's foundation day and vowed to strengthen the country's federal structure.

The TMC was formed on January 1, 1998, after Banerjee walked out of Congress to form her own political party.

Two people were killed in a fire on Sunday that broke out at an Old Age nursing home in south Delhi’s Greater Kailash area, officials said.

Authorities got the information about a fire at Antara Care for Seniors at 5.14 am.

Five fire tenders and a few ambulances were rushed to the spot, and the fire was brought under control by 6.50 am, the fire department said.

The Dalai Lama on Sunday flagged the "growing interest in Buddhism" in China after years of "suppression and oppression" of the faith and its followers.

His Holiness was addressing devotees in Bodh Gaya, the site where the Buddha had attained Enlightenment two millennia ago, after a "long life offering" ceremony, a traditional prayer made for the longevity of the 87-year- old Buddhist leader.

More than 650 persons were booked for alleged drunk driving between December 30 and Sunday morning in Maharashtra's Thane city as part of a traffic safety drive in the run to the new year, a police official said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Vinaykumar Rathod said 156 people were booked on December 30, a total of 233 on December 31 and 270 between midnight and 6am on January 1.

A stringent ban on the use of coal and other unapproved fuels in industries and commercial establishments came into force in Delhi-NCR on Sunday, with officials saying defaulting units will be closed down without any warning.

However, the use of low-sulphur coal in thermal power plants is allowed, the central government's Commission for Air Quality Management said (CAQM).

Extending an olive branch, Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen on Sunday offered to provide Beijing with "necessary assistance" as China continues to grapple with surging COVID-19 cases following its abrupt lifting of virus curbs.

In her traditional New Year's Day speech, Tsai said that everyone had seen the rise in cases in China.

Hundreds of people including political leaders visited Jaystambh military monument in Maharashtra's Pune district on Sunday to mark the 205th anniversary of the Koregaon-Bhima battle amid heavy security deployed at the venue in view of violence near it on January 1, 2018.

Pune Guardian Minister Chandrakant Patil, however, did not visit the memorial to avoid any untoward incident, citing an ink attack threat to him if he went to there.
