t2 decodes dubsmash and finds out why everyone’s going cray-cray over this new video app

TT Bureau Published 06.05.15, 12:00 AM

WHAT IS IT?

Dubsmash is a mobile app that creates short selfie or groupfie videos of 10 seconds where one lip-synches or “dubs” popular songs, iconic film and TV series dialogues, animal sounds, famous cartoon voices, trending ads and any other sound that may catch your fancy.

WHERE DO I GET IT?

The app is available free for iOS and Android at the Apple Store and Android Play Store. It requires a reasonable 7.66MB space.
You can also download Dubsmash APK files from sites such as m.downloadatoz.com, apkbeast.com or www.apknow.com.

STEP-BY-STEP TUTORIAL

1. Choose a new or popular song or create your own sound with Soundboard.
2. Make a selfie/groupfie video dubbing to the sound.
3. Add stickers and texts to your video to make it quirky and personal.
4. If you don’t like the end result, redo and repeat.
5. Share on social media or save it in your gallery.

DUB DEETS

Founders: Jonas Druppel, Roland Grenke and Daniel Taschik from Germany.
Official launch: November 19, 2014.
Reaching #1: Seven days after the official launch, the app reached the top spot in the iOS store in Germany and then in the UK, France, Holland and other countries.
A potential hiccup: There’s always the copyright issue because people are uploading unlicensed content in the form of sound clips. But so far no hassles.
Road ahead: The app’s simplicity could draw advertisers
in a big way.

WHAT WE LOVE AND WHAT WE DON’T

Dubsmash isn’t a social networking platform (yet)
but combines features from a number of popular chatting
and networking sites and apps. Users can add filters like on Instagram, add text and stickers like on Snapchat and produce short videos like on Vine. And with the many sound clip combinations available, the possibilities for creating funny and quirky content is limitless.
One of its main drawbacks is that the app doesn’t have a timeline or newsfeed like Instagram, and the content isn’t set up to be shared, like Snapchat. But you can save the video on your phone and share it across apps and social networks like WhatsApp, Twitter, Instagram or Facebook.
Dubsmash also invites iOS users to upload their dubs with Dubloader. This feature is yet to come for Android devices.

WHEN TO USE IT?

When you are bored at a wedding or at a party, hanging out with friends, not wanting to do something useful but wanting to do something, looking for a good laugh, travelling, indoors, outdoors, anywhere, anytime!

WHO ELSE IS DOING THE DUB?

Rihanna, Reese Witherspoon, Adam Levine, Hugh Jackman, Neymar, Rohit Sharma, Harbhajan Singh, David Miller, Ranveer Singh, Priyanka Chopra, Shruti Hassan, Dhanush...

HOW TO WATCH THEIR DUBS?

From their social networking sites likes Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and Vine.
