RCTC and Racing buffs were all dressed up for Derby day, with The Telegraph

TT Bureau Published 11.01.18, 12:00 AM
Over 21,000 patrons trooped into RCTC on Sunday for the winter derby, the richest race of the season.

What: The Calcutta Derby Stakes (Grade I) 2018 in association with The Telegraph

Where: Royal Calcutta Turf Club

When: January 7

On the cards: Nine races, including the signature races of the day — The Calcutta Derby Stakes (Grade I) and The Dashmesh Stud Alokananda Stakes.

Style story: Shades like millennial pink and maroon rubbed shoulders with black and blue. Dresses — of all lengths — were the chosen silhouette for many, while a few went for skirts and palazzos. Boots and pointed shoes ruled among footwear and hats were everywhere! Men wore blazers and jackets, playing around with the shirt and tie colour combinations.

Sip and bite: From momo and dosa to biryani and chaat, racegoers had a variety to choose from. Wine, beer, whisky and vodka gave everyone a happy high.

#CoupleGoals

We love how these couples were twinning. (Top) While Sanmati Jain’s cold-shoulder top and Pratik’s blazer were a millennial pink, (above) Deepika Jain’s off-shoulder ruffled top and Aditya’s shirt were a midnight blue.

Naina and Patrick Jaidka met  Ishaan Verma (centre) after ages. “I love watching horses run, also the food here is great. Patrick and I live in the US and Ishaan lives in London and we are meeting after a long time,” said Naina.
Photographer Arjun Malhotra clicked a quick groupfie with his squad in between races. What if they could own a horse? “It’d be a brown horse called Quilt,” they decided.

Ankita Goenka and Nalini Goenka complemented each other in black and white. We love how Ankita wore flowers on her hat and the hemline of her skirt.
Manisha Malkani turned heads in her floral midi skirt and headgear from Claire’s. “I love racing and going for shopping before it,” said the businesswoman.
Dimple Keshwani, a first-year St. Xavier’s College student, was busy looking through the racecard. “I love horses. I have been learning riding for the last one year,” said Dimple.
Kritika Kanodia, a third-year Loreto College student, sported an
off-shoulder millennial pink top and black skirt, which she had bought from Paris.

Club speak

“It was another eventful day and the heritage stands of the club were packed with racing enthusiasts enjoying this sporting extravaganza. This is one sport that gives a huge adrenaline high within a minute. And we have lined up plenty of such adrenaline-pumping races during the Cold Weather Season at RCTC to keep the turnstiles of the racecourse rotating,” said club CEO Sudhir Kumar Kothari.

“Derby day was a lovely Sunday and as always the patrons turned out in large numbers. The festive atmosphere made it even better. And the racing was at its best, with Aggregated ridden by Suraj Narredu winning the derby at high odds, that too by two lengths! It was a real fascinating finish,” said Anit Casyab, deputy general manager, club and racing, RCTC.

Mumbai challenger Aggregated, ridden by Suraj Narredu, won the winter derby by two lengths, beating clear-favourite Sana.
