| I usually keep my make-up to a minimum when I step out for brunch. I like using only a mascara and a matte lip gloss during the day. Fortunately my skin behaves well, so I do not need to do much. However when I go out at night, I use a foundation and because I love my eyes, I accentuate them with a smoky effect. And I am particular about using only M. A. C. cosmetic products. |
My eyelids have been turning dark of late. I do admit that I have been using eyeshadow every single day. Is this what is causing the condition? I have very wide set eyes and believe that using shadow makes my eyes look better. Could you please suggest how to do my eyes and also how to avoid darkening of the lids?

The structure of the skin is slightly different around the eye area. It has much less support and its layers are three times thinner than the rest of the face. This means that it dehydrates quicker, ages quicker, becomes sensitive more easily and is the first area to show signs of stress and fatigue.
Causes: If darkening around the eyes is not genetically inherited than it can be either a result of poor circulation, lack of nutrition (especially vitamin K), lack of sleep, allergies due to products that contain untested or harmful chemicals or hormonal imbalances.
Dealing with the symptom: Products containing vitamin K can help. You can also boost vitamin levels by eating more food that contain it, like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, soybean, spinach and liver.
Water: Hydration is of key importance to prevent the appearance of dark eyelids. Keep water at hand and drink throughout the day.
Remove all eye make-up at night with a gentle eye make-up remover before sleeping. Thoroughly rinse with splashes of cool water after cleaning.
Products: Look for anti-ageing eye creams that hydrate and lighten the skin. Ingredients to look for are vitamins C & E. Use your ring finger to dab the product around the eyes in an anti-clock motion. To make eye creams and gels feel more soothing, you can store them in the fridge.
Wide-set eyes:
1. Apply a darker eye colour to the inner portion of the upper eyelid.
2. Apply lighter eyeshadows to the outer portion of the eyelid.
3. Apply eyeliner in a darker colour to the inner half of the upper eyelid.
4. Eyebrow pencil or brow powder may be applied to extend the inner brow line.
