VTEC Technology
It’s every engineer’s dream to make an engine that offers both good economy and optimum power. Honda has mastered the art of making petrol engines that are powerful and wallet-friendly at the same time. VTEC is an acronym that brings a smile to car buyers. It is similar to the MIVEC of Mitsubishi, VVT-I of Toyota, VarioCam Plus of Porsche and VVL by Nissan.
How It Works
Honda’s VTEC system uses variable valve timing and lift that is actuated by a separate set of cam lobes (that push against the valves to open them as the camshaft rotates, to let air pass from the cylinder). The vehicle in question runs zero valve overlap between the two inlet and exhaust valves at low rpm (for optimum efficiency) and high degrees of overlap at high rpm (for maximum power). Honda has come up with many variations of the VTEC system like DOHC VTEC, SOHC VTEC, 3-Stage VTEC and i-VTEC to name a few. But the basic motto remains the getting of maximum possible power without compromising on economy.
