Range Rover will start the local assembly of its flagship models, the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, at Jaguar Land Rover (JLR)’s facility in Pune, marking a first for the iconic models in their 54-year long history to be rolled out from a country outside of the UK.

Till now the two models were only produced in Jaguar Land Rover’s Solihull plant in the UK.

The Pune facility will cater to the domestic demand for Range Rover, bringing down prices by 18-22 per cent. The plant at present assembles the Range Rover Velar, Evoque, Discovery Sport and the Jaguar F-Pace.

“In 2011, JLR entered into a contract manufacturing agreement with Tata Motors in Pune, becoming the first manufacturing facility for JLR outside of the UK,” a company statement said.

With sustained demand, the company has decided to assemble locally the Range Rover flagships that will lower the waiting period.

“Over the last few years, India has witnessed steady and spectacular growth and is poised to grow consistently. This growth has resulted in tremendous opportunities to localise product offerings for the discerning clientele,” Lennard Hoornik, chief commercial officer, JLR, said.

Geraldine Ingham, MD of Range Rover, said: “Retail sales in India for 2023-24 alone have surged 160 per cent, and locally manufacturing the Range Rover will enable the brand to respond to this growing demand among discerning clients and celebrated personalities.”
