Which Bengali keyboard should I use for my Samsung A30 phone that runs on Android version 9? I don’t like apps asking for permission to access my contacts, pictures and microphone. Some even want my password.

Ajit Kundu

Some apps from Google Play are really intrusive and ask for permissions to even read your SMS and one-time passwords received from banks even though the app’s function has nothing to do with messages. If you refuse some permissions, the app will not be able to work. This is frustrating.

Fortunately, a third-party app called Bouncer allows you to grant temporary permissions to Android apps. Bouncer allows you to revoke the permissions later. You can also use Bouncer to browse through the sensitive information you have consented to give some apps on your device. But never let an app read your password. Bouncer costs Rs 75, but it is well worth the investment.

Taking all this into account, the best Bengali keyboard is Indic Keyboard by Indic Project. Before you download it from Google Play, tap on “About the app” and scroll down to see the permissions it needs. They are relatively harmless, although your Samsung phone will warn you that it will be able to read sensitive data. When you configure languages, choose Bengali (Inscript).

Bangla for laptop

Is there a Bengali keyboard for my Windows 8 laptop like the one I have installed on my Android phone?

Prosanto Kumar Shome

You do not need a separate app to enable Bengali on your Windows 8.1 laptop. Go to Control Panel—Languages—Add a language. Choose Bengali (India). Next, click on Options on the chosen language, which in your case is Bengali (India). Now add a keyboard and choose Bengali (Inscript). You can switch between English and Bengali keyboards by pressing left Alt and left Shift. If you are confused where the Bengali keys are, you can open the Windows On-Screen Keyboard and switch to Bengali and see the keyboard layout.

Battery down

My Lenovo laptop shuts down if it is disconnected from the AC power supply. It works fine only when the battery is being charged. Does the battery need to be replaced?

A.K. Agarwal

It looks like your battery has lost most of its capacity. You should get a new one. You can check the status of your battery yourself. Type cmd in the search box on the bottom left. Once the results appear, right-click on cmd.exe and run it as an administrator. When Command Prompt opens, type powercfg–energy. After a few seconds, you will be told that the battery report has been generated. You can find it in C:\ Windows\System32 \energy-report.html.

Port disconnect

My MacBook Pro does not read devices connected to the USB ports. What shall I do?

Dilip Pradhan

You have to reset the System Management Controller (SMC). Shut down the MacBook Pro from the menu. Press Control-Shift-Option on the left of the keyboard and the power button simultaneously for 10 seconds. If you have a MacBook Pro with Touch ID, the Touch ID button is also the power button. Release the keys and press the power button again to turn on your Mac.

If you bought a 2018 model, the procedure is slightly different. Shut down the Mac from the menu. Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds. Release it and wait a few seconds. Press the power button again to turn on your Mac. If the USB ports are not dirty or damaged, they should work now.
