Calcutta, Nov. 26 :     By his standards Tollygunge Agragami coach Amal Dutta, perhaps, wasn?t at his vituperative best after the 105th IFA Shield final. He didn?t call anybody names but merely blamed the supervision and accused the Indian Football Association (IFA) of ruining football. All this while Mohun Bagan coach Subrata Bhattacharya reiterated that much more is made of Tollygunge than is due to them. ?Abdul Khaleque was visibly off-side, certainly four to five steps behind the last defender,? the veteran coach, unusually calm given the kind of statement he was making, said after the match. Though the Tollygunge bench was on the other side of the ground, at least 80 yards from where the goal was scored, Dutta was sure his team was unfairly done in. ?Check the television clippings. If I am incorrect, I will quit football. Otherwise, you should send this match?s video to Fifa for an honest appraisal,? he told the reporter of a television channel. ?All this is pre-planned. Whenever my team has played the city giants, in the League and here, efforts have been made to ensure that we aren?t at full strength,? he said, referring to the suspensions on Kajal Bhattacharjee, Awoyimi Isiaka and Abayomi Felix. A more direct accusation followed. ?Had that chance not been converted, I am sure a penalty would have gone Mohun Bagan?s way on some flimsy pretext or other. Such behind-the-scenes manipulation is objectionable. ?Why does the IFA take the trouble of holding this tournament, at all? They can easily award it to Mohun Bagan and East Bengal every alternate year. This will kill football. Today, you have a crowd of 30,000. Very soon, you may not have that either,? Dutta felt. ?The IFA cannot look beyond its two most famous sons and has therefore given them its two most prestigious events... Nobody is allowed to come up fairly,? the coach of McDowell Cup-winning team said. Mohun Bagan, Dutta said, showed up very poorly in the front third. He also predicted ?they will struggle in the National League.? Dutta said this tournament will help him prune the Tollygunge roster with an eye on the National League. With skilful midfielder Jayanta Sen set to return from a long injury-induced break and a central defender likely to be recruited, Dutta, who said he?d again shown that Mohun Bagan and East Bengal are beatable, predicted his team will be formidable challengers in that competition. Provided, of course, the refereeing is fair. Coach Bhattacharya did not really find this any moment to be delirious about. ?The team is settling down, Abarowei is yet to get into his stride and yet to develop an understanding with his teammates,? he said. ?That sorted out, you will see a different team.? He did not gloat about his trophy on the 16th day of his taking over as the coach. He just reiterated: ?I had said earlier that it was just Tollygunge Agragami versus a big team and I?m saying that now as well.? Of course, he said he was disappointed over his former coach Dutta?s behaviour. Subrata went over to talk to Dutta after the match. Dutta virtually shooed him off: ?What do want here? You have no business here. Go away,? said Dutta brusquely. ?I did not expect this from my former coach,? he said. He said his boys could have performed better in the first half, but ?they were heavily marked.? ?It was creative soccer versus destructive soccer. Destructive soccer cannot last, it will not give Tollygunge Agragami any leverage in the National League.? Abarowei was happy that it was his header that led to the goal. ?In 1996 I had won the Shield here and now today. If I die today, I will be happy that I have been able to achieve so much here,? he said. He said it will take a little time for his teammates to get used to him.
