Flayed wires or spyware?

q+a I get frequently disconnected from the Internet. I have been using Reliance Net Connect for three years with good speed. But recently, after re-installing Windows XP, I find the dial-up connection snaps every time in the middle of an Internet session.

There is no one single reason for such a problem; it could vary from flayed wires to spyware. Since it began after you reinstalled Windows, check whether your computer is set to disconnect when idle. Open Control Panel and then Internet Options. Click on the Connection tab. Choose your dial-up connection and click on Settings and then on Advanced. Uncheck Disconnect if idle for (…) minutes. The other thing to look out for is whether you have Call Waiting enabled. If so, you will get disconnected when someone calls.

Also, check your modem settings. Open Network Connections in Control Panel and right click on your connection. Click configure and reduce the maximum speed to 57600. In most systems, this is set to 115200 by default. Restart your computer. Finally, get hold of your Ad-Aware SE Personal from www.lavasoft.de and scan for spyware.

Rundll error

q+a For sometime now, I find a message “RUNDLL Error loading cmicnfg.cpl. The specified module could not be found” appearing each time I start my computer (Windows XP-professional, 256MB RAM, Celeron 2.26 Ghz). After clicking ‘OK’, I can work on the computer without any visible problem. How do I get rid of this error message?

This is a problem with the files for your sound card. There is a simple way to get rid of it at start-up. Just delete the CMAudio key from the registry. Go to Start->Run and type Regedit. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE->Microsoft->Windows->CurrentVersion->Run. In this folder you should see CMAudio. Delete it. Your sound card will work properly even after deleting this file.

Mobile Internet

q+a I have a Nokia 6670 with a Hutch connection. I downloaded Opera Mini, but it fails to connect to the internet. My friend is using a Nokia 6030 with the same connection but he is able to use Opera Mini. We both have the 3.0 version. Help!

Adit Khiroria

Opera Mini is an extremely good Internet browser for the mobile phone. It is much faster than the browsers that come bundled with most phones. The first thing you should check is whether your GPRS settings are correct. See if you can connect to the Internet with your phone's browser. If the setting is fine, then download Version 2 of Opera Mini. It will work better with your model.

Thumbnail view

q+a I have a file called thumbs.db in almost every folder of my computer. I tried to delete them but to no avail. Please advise.

Thumbs.db is a file that is generated by your computer when you view the contents of a folder with a Thumbnail view. Most people find this very irritating. To get rid of it, open Folder Options from your Control Panel. Click on the View tab. Put a check mark next to Do not Cache Thumbnails. Now you can delete these files safely. The downside of not caching thumbnails is that if you have many pictures in a folder, they will take a long time to display. If you can live with it, then it is fine.

Error message

q+a I have been using Musicmatch Jukebox for quite a while. Recently, I installed Quicktime. Now when I open it, a dialogue box keeps appearing that says “MMDiag.exe - Application Error” followed by “The instruction at 0x7c93426d referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be read”. Similar dialogue boxes appear when I open some other programs. I have Windows XP SP2. How can I get rid of it?

Writayan Das

Musicmatch Jukebox is a Yahoo! application. It tracks the songs you play and offers you similar music that you may like. The file mmdiag.exe belongs to this program. It does not start properly on some computers running Windows XP, giving you these error messages. The best way to get rid of it is to rename the file MMDiag.exe. You could even delete it.
