Many of my friends are senior citizens and, though they like to own and play around with modern technology, they find the iPhone X perplexing. This post is dedicated to them.

Don't get into a panic if your phone becomes unresponsive and appears to have frozen up. It could be due to an app that you have installed or an update, which did not instal properly. Turn your phone off and on. This should take care of the problem.

However, this process of restarting your device has changed for iPhone X. Press the side button together with the volume up or volume down button firmly. This will bring up the "slide to power off" option. Be careful because even a slight tremor on the side button is interpreted as a double click and Siri is launched. If the buttons are not pressed firmly, you will end up with a screenshot, which is got by pressing the side button and the volume up button together.

To do a hard reboot or force restart on iPhone X, press and quickly release the volume up button and the do the same for volume down button. Then press the side button till the display becomes dark. Keep holding the side button till the Apple logo appears.

Previously, you would use the Home button to switch apps or to quickly close an unresponsive app. Now, to access the app switcher, place your finger at the bottom centre of your screen and slowly swipe up till you come to the middle of the display and pause for a second until all your app cards appear. If you swipe too fast and don't pause then you will just go back to the Home screen. Switch your apps by tapping on the card you want. To close the app, press on the app card till a red minus sign appears on the top left of the card. Tap the minus sign to close the app. Swipe diagonally from the bottom right to the top left to go to the Home (first) screen.

With your failing eyesight, you should turn on the built-in magnifying glass in iOS. To do this, go to Settings - General - Accessibility and tap on Magnifier. Slide the Magnifier to turn it on. A triple-click on the side button will now launch the magnifier.

While you are in Settings, remember to turn on the Find My iPhone feature. You will then be able to locate your expensive iPhone if it has slipped under the cushion or if you have lost it. You can log in with your Apple ID at www.icloud.com and track down the iPhone and disable it or erase it completely. Go to Settings - Your Apple ID profile - iCloud - Find My iPhone and enable it. Turn on Send Last Location and the iPhone will automatically send the location of iPhone to Apple when the battery is low.

In iOS 11 there is an Emergency SOS option for unexpected situations. By clicking the side button and both the volume buttons simultaneously you call emergency services. Emergency contacts must be set up in the Health app. Fill in as much data in the Health app as you can, as this can be very useful later. Open Settings - Emergency SOS. Turn on Auto Call and Countdown Sound.

Face ID on the iPhone X is very secure, but it has its drawbacks. Just press and hold the side button, and either one of the volume buttons quickly to disable Face ID should you feel somebody might get hold of your iPhone X and quickly point it to your face to unlock it.

The Control Centre is a very useful utility in iOS 11 that comes with your iPhone X. Swipe down from the top right corner of the display and you get important shortcuts. Here you might want to want to add a shortcut to record your screen with audio. Go to Settings -Control Centre - Customise Control and add Screen Recording. When you record the screen, the audio is turned off by default. To turn it on, hard press on the icon in the Control Centre.
