Spectators treated to daring feats

Sainik School, Goalpara celebrated its annual athletics and parents’ body meeting on December 18 and 19. The spectators were treated to different presentations by the cadets like band display, stilt walking and daring feats like diving through a ring of fire.

Principal Sanjay Nirmal, who was the chief guest, advised the cadets to utilise the sports facilities and develop their skills in sports and games. At the parents’ body meeting, constructive suggestions were given by parents to improve the overall functioning of the school.

A cultural function was organised in honour of the parents. The Saraswati vandana, comedy skit and Bihu dance stole the limelight. Chilarai House bagged the first position, followed by Lohit, Lachit and Udaygiri respectively.

Celebration

Ramanujan Day, marking the birth anniversary of the great mathematician, was celebrated at DHSK College, Dibrugarh on December 22

The programme was inaugurated by Pradeep Kumar Chetia Phukan, head of the mathematics department, Dibru College. Geetanjali Pegu, a third-year student of the department, gave an elaborate lecture on the life and works of Ramanujan.

Chief guest Baldev Banerjee of the department of mathematics, Dibrugarh University, threw some light on the different aspects of mathematics and some interesting facts about Ramanujan.

Besides an extempore speech competition on different aspects of mathematics, an exciting and entertaining open quiz competition was also conducted.

Milton Choudhury walked away with the first prize for extempore speech, while Jugen Dutta won the second prize.

Surajit Sarma was the best participant of the open quiz competition.

Workshop

The Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati and the C.R. Rao Advanced Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science, Hyderabad will jointly organise a two-day workshop on image and signal processing beginning on December 28 at IIT Guwahati.

The objective of the workshop is to provide an opportunity for students, faculty, scientists and engineers to interact with leading researchers in image and signal processing areas.

There will also be invited talks from several experts in these and related areas from India and abroad, besides poster presentations of contributed papers.

The organisers said that in recent decades, there has been a tremendous growth in the applications of signal processing, largely triggered by the rapid advances in information technology. Besides theoretical research, emphasis is given on challenging problems in modelling and understanding signals like speech, image and video, sonar, radar and seismic. Progress in these areas has a significant effect on all walks of human life.
