On this day, the first long-distance telegraphic message in India was sent over the line from Agra to Kolkata, a distance of 1300km. The construction of the line from Kolkata to Agra had started in November 1853.

On February 1, 1855, the opening of several lines were notified: from Kolkata to Agra, from there to Attock (now in Pakistan), and again from Agra to Bombay (now Mumbai) and from there to Madras (now Chennai).

Forty-one offices were set up for the lines that were extended over about 5,000km. Soon, telegraph lines would be extended to Peshawar (now in Pakistan), Ooty and Burma.
