Rujira Banerjee, wife of Trinamul Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, was questioned at the Enforcement Directorate office on Wednesday for eight-and-a-half hours in connection with the alleged irregularities in recruitment for government-aided schools, ED sources said.

Rujira, who had been summoned multiple times by the central agency in connection with the alleged coal scam, was questioned over the alleged recruitment irregularities for the first time on Wednesday.

Rujira, one of the directors of Leaps and Bounds Pvt Ltd, had entered the ED office at 11.07am and left around 7.35pm.

She did not speak to the media persons waiting outside the ED office at the CGO complex in Salt Lake.

Sources in the ED said she was questioned about the company’s financial transactions. “She can be examined again if more questions arise,” said a source in the central agency.

The ED during its raids in the office of the company a few weeks ago had found documents related to two bank accounts that belonged to Rujira, sources in the agency said.

She was questioned about those bank accounts, too, the sources said.

Abhishek, who the ED has said is the CEO of Leaps and Bounds, had handed
documents related to the company to the agency on Tuesday evening, in compliance
with a Calcutta High Court order.

The high court division bench of Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Uday Kumar had last week given Abhishek time till October 10 to submit the documents to the agency.

The bench had asked the Enforcement Directorate to go through the documents and then decide if they still wanted to question the leader.

Abhishek’s parents, Lata and Amit Banerjee, who had also been summoned in connection with the same case last week, did not appear for questioning. They instead sent documents the agency had asked them to submit.

Sources in the central agency said they were assessing the documents they received from Abhishek and would decide on the next steps accordingly.

Last week, the court had also told the central agency that if they wanted to
question Abhishek, they should do so before October 19 or after October 26, considering the Durga Puja dates this year.

Panchami is on October 19, while Vijaya Dashami is on October 24.
