Ranchi, July 11: For a varsity that has stepped into its second year of functioning, seven out of 10 seems to be a fair score.

The Central University of Jharkhand (CUJ) has received an encouraging response in seven out of 10 courses offered by it, prompting officials here to hold a three-day on-campus counselling session between Wednesday and Thursday based on the results/merit list of Central University Common Entrance Tests (CUCET), 2010, offered by the central varsities of Jharkhand, Bihar, Karnataka, Kashmir, Kerala, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu.

Around 3,500 aspirants from across the country sat for the tests that took place on June 19-20 in centres across the country.

This year, the CUJ has raised the number of courses on offer from four to 10 — five-year integrated courses in applied physics, applied chemistry, applied mathematics, mass communication, life sciences, English, business administration and highly specialised ones like water engineering and management, nano-technology and indigenous cultural studies.

It has increased seats from 160 to 400, 40 for each course, though sources hinted that the number of seats may increase further.

Sources said barring life sciences, indigenous culture studies and English, other courses drew good response. The institute also held a special test for a few aspirants who could not sit for the June 19-20 tests due to an information glitch.

Vice-chancellor D.T. Khathing told The Telegraph that the varsity was buoyed by the good response. “We are hopeful that our seats will be filled by good quality students this year,” he said.

A communiqué issued by CUJ registrar Shyam Narain advised all candidates who had appeared in CUCET, 2010 on June 19 for admission in the varsity’s five-year integrated course, to visit the university website www.cuj.ac.in regularly to know their rank and also to visit the Brambe campus for counselling.

Students have been advised to come along with all original documents to support their educational qualifications, college/school leaving certificate, migration certificate, five colour photographs, category certificates (if any) and character certificate.

Brambe, along Ranchi-Lohardaga road (NH-75), houses the temporary campus of CUJ, which currently operates out of a rented accommodation provided by the state.

A site selection team of the Union ministry of HRD has earmarked Sukurhutu in Kanke on the outskirts of the capital as a permanent campus.
