"For the first time in Jharkhand, the state government will launch a course on remote sensing and allied sciences to benefit students, researchers, scientists and government employees," said Sarvesh Singhal, JSAC director.

He added, "Government employees and officials, who deal with remote sensing, global navigation and satellite system, can also apply for the course. The course will also help students get jobs."

The course, which will be affiliated to Ranchi University, has been divided in four modules namely remote sensing and digital image analysis, geographical information system, global navigation satellite system, remote sensing and GIS applications.

Classes will be held for 5 days a week, including theory, practical and two weeks of project work.

The course will focus on subjects like agriculture, soil, forestry, ecology, water resources, geology, urban and regional planning, topology, geographic system, natural resources and disaster management.

"We received a nod from Ranchi University to launch it as a degree course, but initially we decided to start with a certificate course. If we get a positive response, then we might continue it as degree course," said Singhal.

The tuition fee for the course is Rs 5,000. Candidates can apply online at the JSCA website ( jsac.jharkhand.gov.in) till March 5.

The names of selected candidates will be declared on March 31. Selection will be on the basis of academic performance or work experience, followed by a face-to-face interview.

"Since this will be the first batch, so we have decided to enrol a maximum of 14 students. Government employees will be given preference. The course, which has been conceptualised by current JSCA director, will serve a key purpose to provide skilled manpower to government and private companies," said Najmul Hoda, scientist-cum-administrator of JSCA.
