Gurunanak Higher Secondary School was established on February 13, 1965 and its first academic session started in the year 1968.
It is a co-educational English- medium school affiliated to the CBSE board. Sant Nischal Singh founded it.
The Guru Nanak School authorities believe in holistic development of its students. The emphasis is not only on the curriculum but also on developing the overall moral fibre of its students. Thereby, there are myriad activities that encourage students to become more compassionate, at the same time making them on par with Gen X.
School principal C. Terence feels that keeping in mind the present demand for fresher avenues for students, the school is also planning to introduce more interesting courses such as entreprenuership in Classes XI and XII.
?There are many who would be able to avail this course which would help them to understand the demands of the job market better. The school?s approach is more pragmatic, with focus on what students want, rather than what others want for them,? he adds.
lThere are house quizzes for students everyday. Each and every studentg is encouraged to participate and put in their entries. And if the response is anything to go by, the quizzes are more than well- received as there are more than 2,000 entries per day for a particular question.
?We mainly conduct quizzes to raise awareness among students on current affairs. Students from Classes VI to XII compete. It is a daily affair in the school. Besides we have also introduced a computer quiz for those students who are interested, and the questions are based on course material,? said Terence.
?Our main aim is to produce as many IITs, civil servants and NDA students from the school. We also conduct mock entrance tests for IIT aspirants for Classes XI and XII,? said the principal.
Plans are afloat to encourage students to strive towards greater glory. ?We are going to collaborate with the Kota institutions for correspondence courses for those students who cannot move to Kota for coaching classes. We would also keep a set of mock tests ready, in the library,? added the principal.
But don?t be fooled by the idea that the emphasis is only on the better students. The school is planning to introduce remedial classes for those students who lag behind in studies after the school hours.
lThere are also plans on the cards to build a mathematics laboratory. By the end of this year, the lab would be ready with equipment in place. The next mathematics Olympiad should be an easy affair.
lThere are two libraries in the school, both for junior and the senior sections. Keeping in mind the background of many students, there are journals and magazines from Chandigarh and Patiala in the library. Assistant librarian Praveen Shankar said there are around 20,000 books such as encyclopedia, fiction, current affairs, magazine such as Sports Star, Frontline and Competition Success. There are altogether 10 librarians in the school who are there to help out each student to seek out material for his or her use.
lThe school provides all the needed help to students coming from a poorer background by giving them free textbooks.
Especially those students from Gurunanak Home for Handicapped get their materials from here. Besides, the school also collects old articles such as tiffin boxes, water bottles and school bags to donate to the poor children studying in the Governor house.
For the good students, the school provides 50 per cent concession, while for the toppers, fees are exempt completely.
lThe school organises CBSE Cluster Athlete Tournament conducted by the board. This year there is the buzz of the all-state table tennis tournament . There is an exclusive physical education department in the school, which is well equipped. Games such as basketball, cricket, chess, carom and table tennis are encouraged as all work and no play makes every student a dull teenager.
The school has its own basketball court. For those who are martial arts freaks, there are training classes for them as well.
lThere are two wings of NCC for both boys and girls. Nine students comprising both boys and girls have been selected for the Republic Day celebrations.
The principal said, ?I am not in favour of banning mobiles from school as far as it is not misused. It has now become a necessity as many students come from outside to study in Plus Two. Hence they need to be in constant touch with their parents,? added the principal.
lThe students are divided into four houses mainly Ravi, Beas, Chenab and Sutlej who take part in various in-house competitions.
