Aamgachhi (Dumka), March 9: The death of a victim of the Kathikund police firing last Friday has triggered a public uproar.
Siget Marandi, 30, who was under treatment at RIMS, Ranchi, died last Friday, thus taking the toll of the Kathikund firing to two. Siget’s body was today brought to Aamgachhi from his native place, Panchwaheni, under Shikaripara block, for burial.
A mob of 6,000 villagers, including women and children carrying weapons, flocked to the burial ground and started a demonstration there. The protesters vowed to teach the government a lesson not only in the upcoming general elections, but also in the next state Assembly elections.
Ghanshyam, adviser to the Jharkhand Ulgulan Manch, a rights’ body, said : “We have already started campaigning in the remote parts of Jharkhand. We are making the voters aware of the inhuman acts of the government,” he said.
Siget was buried beside Lakhiram Tudu, another villager who had died in the police firing in Kathikund in December 6, last year. The villagers were protesting against the acquisition of land for setting up of a power plant in Aamgachhi-Pokhariya villages.
Siget’s body was brought to Dumka late on Saturday night. After about 50 hours, the district administration finally managed to hand over the body to his family members last night. Dumka police chief Arun Kumar Singh had set today as the deadline for receiving the body. Otherwise the police would perform the last rituals, he had warned Siget’s family members.
Siget’s widow Malti Hembrom held the Dumka district administration responsible for her husband’s death.
His mother Sukhi Tudu said: “After the bullets were removed from his abdomen, he was chained to the cot at the prisoners’ ward in RIMS. This aggravated the injuries, causing his death.”
Siget’s elder brother Parameshwar Marandi had filed a writ petition at Jharkhand High Court, accusing RIMS of neglecting his brother.
