New Delhi, April 18: A JNU student has alleged that her MPhil degree has been "withheld" as she was probed over the controversial February 9 protests this year against Afzal Guru's execution, even though she had finished the course last year.
Chintu Kumari, now a PhD scholar of political science and a member of the CPIML-Liberation backed All India Students Association, was not suspended unlike some others despite the probe panel indicting her over the event that triggered the JNU crackdown.
Chintu said she had been told by JNU's evaluation branch today that her degree had been "withheld" on chief proctor A.P. Dimri's orders as she had faced the inquiry. "I am not among the eight students debarred (suspended from classes). I have replied to the showcause. In any case, the event took place while I was doing my PhD, not my MPhil which I had completed last year," Chintu said.
Those suspended included student union president Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya. The trio also spent weeks in jail on sedition charges.
Asked about Chintu's case, Dimri said over phone from Dehradun this evening: "This shouldn't happen. If it has, there must be some reason. I will return to the campus and check."
Earlier, student union general secretary Rama Naga and a PhD scholar, Shweta Raj - both showcaused like Chintu - had said their stipends had been blocked on similar grounds. JNU registrar Pramod Kumar claimed it was because of a "technical error".
