June 15: City candidates bagged six spots in the top 10, including the coveted first position, in the HSLC examination, the results for which were declared today.
This, despite Seba’s decision to cut down the number of ranks from 20 to 10, is quite a feat indeed.
The overall number of rank holders in the state came down to 41 today compared to 71 last year but given the fewer number of positions available, the number in the top 10 ranks went up, as only 25 students had figured in the top 10 last year.
All rank holders from the city were from five private schools — St Mary’s English High School at Maligaon, Holy Child HS School, Happy Child High School at Rehabari, St Mary’s HS School near Gauhati Club and Assam Jatiya Bidyalay at Noonmati.
Bhaswati Deka of St Mary’s English High School, Maligaon, shared the first position with Gyandeep Sarma of Sankardev Shishu Bidya Niketan, Bokakhat, and Stuty Khound of Sankardev Shishu Bidya Niketan, Biswanath Chariali.
Bhaswati, who is undergoing coaching in New Delhi to prepare herself for engineering entrance examinations, said she would try to get admission in Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). She has already taken admission at Lal Bahadur Shastri School in New Delhi.
Her father, Mukunda Deka, is an executive engineer at NF Railway and mother, Dipika Haloi Deka, is a teacher at Assam Engineering Institute.
Bhaswati likes to paint and listen to music. She said she took tuition in Assamese, mathematics, advanced mathematics and English to prepare for the examination.
Neha Sharma from Holy Child HS School secured the fourth position.
Ipsita Das, who got the sixth rank and would be taking admission in Gauhati Commerce College, plans to become a chartered accountant. “I was hopeful to be one of the rank holders. I am very happy today,” Ipsita said.
Ipsita’s father Dilip Kumar Das is a senior accounts officer at the Accountant General’s office at Beltola and mother, Jayanti, is a homemaker. Ispita likes reading, especially Satyajit Ray’s books.
Himakshi Boro, who came 10th, will study science at Cotton College.
Assam Jatiya Bidyalay principal Aparajita Dutta said they were happy with the result. “We think it is a good result. Had Seba not reduced the number of ranks to 10 from 20, our school would have more students among the rank holders,” Dutta said.
Two students of the school — Priti Parmita and Ankur Jyoti Goswami — secured the sixth and 10th ranks respectively. Dutta said 143 students had appeared in the exam, of whom 138 secured first division and the rest second division.
