Guwahati: France rode a brace by their hugely talented forward Amine Gouiri to beat Japan 2-1 and qualify for the round of 16 of the Fifa U-17 World Cup from Group E, being played at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium here.
Gouiri scored in either side of the break in the most-awaited match of the league stage here, to take his tally to four from two games, two of those coming in France's first match against New Caledonia on Sunday.
He put France ahead in the 13th minute, latching on to a through from Maxence Caqueret to get past rival custodian Kosei Tani, who was leading the team in the absence of regular captain Shimpei Fukuoka.
He made it 2-0 in the 71st minute, off a tap from Yacine Adli, the other talented forward marked closely by Japan, and who "dreams" of playing for Barcelona.
Japan pulled one back two minutes later through forward Taisei Miyashiro off a penalty awarded for a foul against him.
