New Delhi, Oct. 2: President Ram Nath Kovind today set up a commission headed by a retired judge, G. Rohini, to examine the sub-categorisation of other backward classes (OBCs).
Sub-categorisation refers to splitting the existing 27 per cent quota among specific communities, based on their proportionate population. The sub-categorisation is aimed at ensuring that the more backward among the OBCs can access the benefits of reservation for educational institutions and government jobs.
A month after the cabinet approved a proposal for sub-categorisation, Kovind's office issued the notification about the composition of the commission.
Apart from Justice Rohini, social scientist J.K. Bajaj is a member. The director of the Anthropological Survey of India, the registrar-general of India and a joint secretary from the social justice and empowerment ministry are ex-officio members.
The commission will submit its report with 12 weeks, a statement issued by the President's secretariat said.
The commission will work out the mechanism, criteria, norms and parameters for sub-categorisation.
