JU gherao ends after 32hrs

Aug. 12: Agitating Jadavpur University students ended their gherao early today after holding the vice-chancellor, registrar and other executive council members hostage for more than 32 hours.

The gherao ended around 1.30am after a meeting of the general body. But VC Suranjan Das and others left the campus in the morning because they had retired for the night by the time the students went to convey their decision.

The authorities had assured the students yesterday evening of forwarding their opinion to the government.

The students started the gherao on Thursday evening, demanding the authorities reject the government order making student unions apolitical. They wanted the authorities to adopt a resolution and write to the higher education department rejecting the order.

While calling off the gherao, the students announced a meeting of the general body on August 17 to decide the next course of action.
