Sahadev Das and Benimadhab Roy in Dhemaji on Thursday
Dhemaji, April 20: The court of the Dhemaji district first class judicial magistrate today sent president of the Assam unit of the Nikhil Bharat Bangali Udbastu Samanway Samitee (Nibbuss), Sahadev Das, and its secretary Benimadhab Roy to four-day judicial remand on completion of their 10-day police remand.
The duo were arrested recently in Siliguri, north Bengal, in connection with the Silapathar unrest.
They were produced in the court amid tight security this afternoon and will be produced again in the court along with prime accused and Nibbuss national president Subodh Biswas and his accomplice Subhash Biswas on Monday.
The superintendent of police, Dhemaji, Nilesh Sawakare, said: "We produced the accused Sahdev Das and Benimadhab Roy whom the court has sent them to judicial custody. On April 24, the four will be produced in court again."
Assam police, CID, special superintendent of police, N. Rajamarthandan, too, will be produced in court on Monday at the end of his 14-day judicial custody.
Gauhati High Court has asked the Assam government to file its response on a petition filed by Subodh seeking dismissal of the FIR against him for allegedly inciting violence at Silapathar after a Nibbuss rally on March 6. A single-judge bench of Justice Suman Shyam directed Dispur to furnish its reply within May 8.
Subodh was arrested on March 22 from a village in Bengal's North 24-Parganas district.
Trouble started on March 6 after suspected Nibbuss members allegedly ransacked an AASU office during a procession at Silapathar following the rally. Subodh had addressed a public meeting at a school ground before the procession.
The meeting resolved to demand the release of Bengali Hindus who are lodged in detention camps on the suspicion of being foreigners.
