Ranchi, March 20: Consumer forums across the state will soon have generators to ensure power supply during blackouts with the state food and civil supplies department releasing Rs 1.44 crore for the purpose today.
The development comes in the wake of a Jharkhand High Court order this January directing the department to provide 50KVA generator to each of the 24 consumer forums in as many districts across the state running to redress consumer grievances under the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 1986.
The high court had heard a PIL filed by one Sunil Oraon demanding proper infrastructure at consumer forums across the state.
Confirming the department, secretary of food and civil supplies department Vinay Kumar Choubey said apart from 24 district consumer forums, a generator will also be bought for the state consumer commission, the apex body to redress consumer disputes in Jharkhand.
Officials at the district consumer forum in Ranchi expressed their relief at the announcement.
"Like in every year, we were worried about power crisis hampering our work. Now we are relaxed. I hope tenders for generators are floated soon and within a month the devices arrive at our respective consumer offices," said an official at the Ranchi consumer forum.
His colleague said they had an inverter but its limited power backup resulted in relief for only half an hour or so. During summer, we have a tough time in office without fans and air-conditioners in the event of a power cut."
The Telegraph had raised the issue of generators in its report 'Dormant consumer forums get heads, Infrastructure hurdle looms large', published on March 7.
