March 20: A youth slashed a 55-year-old woman with a razor inside her home yesterday evening in an apparent attempt to snatch her gold chain, police said today.
Manju Sonekar was in the kitchen of her house on Joy Mitra Street in the Burtolla area around 7pm when she felt someone tugging at her chain.
Turning around she saw a youth holding on to the chain. "She was alone and the main door was open... it usually remains open," Sonekar's son Suraj said. "As she resisted his attempts to snatch the chain, he slashed her forehead with a razor. But she did not let go off the chain."
As she started screaming, the youth ran out of the ground-floor house and climbed the stairs to the terrace, the police said. Her screams alerted neighbours who gave chase and managed to catch the youth even after he had crossed over to the terrace of multiple buildings by jumping over parapets, the police said.
Sonekar's house is in a congested locality in Sovabazar.
"Our neighbours helped capture him while he was trying to flee," Suraj said.
The youth, later identified as Suman Shaw, was handed over to officers of Burtolla police station.
Sonekar was taken to a hospital and given first aid.
Later yesterday, she left for Mumbai by train for a pilgrimage to Shirdi, her other son, Laltu, said.
The body of a youth in his early 20s was found hanging from a roadside tree on Strand Road, near Howrah bridge, early on Monday. Police said they were alerted by a motorist who spotted the body. A probe revealed the youth, a pavement-dweller identified as Rubel, committed suicide.
