Cuttack, Feb. 12: A mob today torched a tractor after a five-year-old boy was killed when the vehicle hit a motorcycle that the boy and his father were riding on the city's main thoroughfare at Darga Bazaar.

The father of the dead boy did not suffer any injuries. The mob also pelted stones at a police station.

A police officer said the incident took place around 8.40am when the victim, Syed Shoib Ali, and his father Syed Akbar Ali, 40, were returning home on a motorcycle from a relative's house.

"When they reached the road in front of the exit entrance of Big Bazaar, a tractor engaged by the Cuttack Municipal Corporation hit the motorcycle from the head on. Shoib, who was riding pillion, was tossed into the air before landing on his head. Akbar did not suffer any injuries," said the officer.

A crowd soon gathered at the spot and set the tractor on fire. The police reached soon after and took the tractor driver into custody, who claimed it wasn't his fault. He told the police that the man riding the motorcycle suddenly came in his way.

The mob also pelted stones at the Darga Bazaar police station damaging two police control room vans. The situation was brought under control after deployment of armed police force.

Police station inspector in charge Ramesh Kumar Mahana said: "The boy was first taken to the nearby City Hospital. Later, he was moved to the SCB Hospital, but he succumbed to his head injuries." He added: "We have lodged a case and the tractor driver, K. Gopala, has been arrested."

"The situation is now under control," deputy commissioner of police (Cuttack) Sanjeev Arora said.
