Wife torture FIR on ex-DGP son-in-law

Patna, Oct. 10: The son-in-law of a former director-general of police has been arrested from Mumbai on charges of torturing his wife and forcing her into an abortion.

A special team of Patna police arrested the accused, Apoorva Mohan, from Mumbai and brought him to Patna on Saturday. He was forwarded to jail on Sunday night under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 498A (subjecting wife to cruelty), 313 (causing miscarriage without woman's consent) and 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the IPC among others.

Mohan's wife Shail Mohan lodged the FIR on September 10 at the Women's police station in Patna. She accused her husband of beating and torturing her, and forcibly taking her to New Delhi for an abortion. She was tortured and threatened after the abortion too. The complainant also accused Mohan's mother, sister and other relatives, stating that her husband tortured her on provocation by his mother.

Officers said Mohan, originally from Bokaro in Jharkhand, is posted as chief manager with a private bank in Mumbai. His father-in-law, whose name is being withheld, was a strict and upright police officer and had an illustrious career.

Mohan owns a flat in an apartment complex in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, close to New Delhi, where his mother, sister and other relatives stay. "Our special team arrested the accused and brought him back to be prosecuted," a senior officer said. "He is a well educated and a well-off person. The charges against him are serious. He was interrogated and produced in court after which he has been forwarded to Beur Central Jail."
