Tezpur, Sept. 23: Air Commodore K.V.R. Raju, air officer commanding, Tezpur air force station, today said, "The air force station is always ready to face any challenges and is well equipped to face the enemy or conduct peace-time operations."

Defence spokesperson Lt Col Sombit Ghosh said the air force station today began celebrations for the 84th anniversary of Indian Air Force, which falls on October 8.

"The air force station, Tezpur, is one of the main fighter bases of the Eastern Air Command and was formed on September 29, 1959," said Wing Commander Mahesh. The air base was established in 1942 during World War II, he added.

He said over the years the air force station had transformed itself into a very important IAF base by inducting the latest aircraft and wea-pons in its inventory and was ready to respond promptly and effectively in any contingency. He said after the induction of two SU-30 MKI squadrons, the Akash missile has been added to the base inventory. "The Tezpur air force station is located about 172km from the China border, 146km from the Myanmar border and 60km from the Bangladesh border," he said.

The nearest three airfields in China are around 350km from this base. The advanced landing ground at Ziro in Arunachal Pradesh is monitored by the air force station.
