Student attempts suicide

Guwahati, Aug. 19: A 15-year-old student attempted to take his life, unable to cope with mental and physical torture allegedly inflicted upon him by a senior.

The Class IX student was admitted to GMCH last night when he took ill after consuming phenyl.

Doctors treating the boy said he was out of danger. "We flushed out the phenyl and he is out of danger now. But he is still in shock," said a doctor.

His mother today said he had taken such a drastic step unable to bear the ragging at school. She said the school principal was aware of it, but did little about it. "His senior, a student of Class X, used to beat him and extort money from him. We had complained about this to the principal quite a few times, but he paid no heed to our complaints. Of late, my son used to be very depressed and last night he consumed phenyl," she said.

"The senior used to verbally abuse him, too. He did not share much about his problems in school, and probably because of that reason, we had no idea how badly he was being tortured. The principal knew about the senior's activities and still allowed it to continue," the mother added.

Confronted with the allegations, the principal admitted that a senior used to torment the juniors.

"We are aware that one of the students used to beat up the juniors and demand money from them. We had informed the student's parents and have punished him for doing so. But he still continued doing such acts. Tomorrow, he will be rusticated from the school," he said.
