Former principal of Surendranath College Sisutosh Samanta speaks at BA community hall.
• The elderly put up several performances at BA community hall recently when Salt Lake Senior Citizens’ Association celebrated its 19th foundation day. The oldest performer was aged 91.
An audio drama Krishna was presented in which member Sipra Sain played the lead role of Draupadi speaking out before her vastra haran. Live music was played by Sathi Sanyal and others. “We presented songs like Jago nari jago and Osru bhora bedona to depict Draupadi’s predicament,” said Sanyal.
Another audio drama Punna Ho had 11 members taking part. Ajit Sasmal had written the script on a period of time when Rabindranath Tagore was asked by his father to assume responsibilities of zamindari work but he was distraught to see the religious divisions among his subjects. Sasmal directed it as well as played the role of Tagore. The senior-most member of the group Pran Gobindo Saha, at 91, took part in this act too.

Former principal of Surendranath College Sisutosh Samanta was the chief guest and the event also saw the launch of an autobiography by the association’s 89-year-old president Asoke Chaudhuri. Since Chaudhuri is hard of hearing his granddaughter Shinjini Deb spoke on his behalf: “My grandfather has been a noted cardiologist and the book is his memoir,” said the college-goer who herself danced to a Sanskrit sloka. “I love performing here as it’s not just about making my grandpa happy. It’s about making lots of grandpas and grandmas happy,” she said. Even her mother Sarmistha sang.
General secretary of the association M.K. Pathak said their 53 members go for picnics and contribute write-ups to their souvenir Smarak Patrika. Its latest issue was distributed at the event. “But our most important event is our morning walk and adda at BA-CA Park daily and because of it we are healthy and fit,” he smiled.
