Forest land grab pangs for Cuttack brewery

Cuttack, May 5: Authorities today sealed the distillery unit of S.R. Breweries at Barapada in Tangi-Choudwar tehsil for encroaching on several acres of forest land.

"The brewery was sealed in pursuance of the National Green Tribunal's direction for closure of the unit with immediate effect," said divisional forest officer of Cuttack district Sudarshan Behera.

The tribunal's east zone bench in Calcutta had directed the forest and environment department's principal secretary, additional chief forest conservator, Cuttack district collector and the divisional forest officer to ensure that the distillery unit was not permitted to operate. The closure order came during the hearing of the case filed by green campaigner Subash Mohapatra of Bhubaneswar-based Global Human Rights Commission.

The tribunal, in its April 5 order, expected submission of the compliance report tomorrow.

Mohapatra had filed the case, seeking the tribunal's intervention against the forest and environment department's inaction in unauthorised construction of a building and a water body over 4.5 acres of forest land by S.R. Breweries.

In his petition, Mohapatra had sought interim stay on the ongoing construction activity and operation of the distillery unit till disposal of the case.
