Workshop on census techniques

Kokrajhar, Feb. 17: A daylong census technique workshop on golden langur ( Trachypithecus geei) was held among forest staff and NGO volunteers at Choraikhola in Kokrajhar.

The workshop was organised by Kokrajhar wildlife division in association with Primate Research Centre NE India yesterday with the objective to create awareness about census technique of golden langur and its conservation.

The actual census will take place on February 22 for a week and the final report is expected to be published by the first week of March.

Kokrajhar divisional forest officer Raghunath Boro and Jihosuo Biswas of Primate Research Centre NE India attended the programme and spoke on the occasion.

Boro said the workshop was organised among the frontline staff of the forest department and NGO members to create awareness on conserving the golden langur, which is a Schedule-I animal under the Indian Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and found only in this part of the region.

He said organising the workshop and training on census of golden langur will help identify the rare primate in the region. "We have planned to conduct a census in Chakrashila wildlife sanctuary in February, which is the best time to do so," Boro said.

The golden langur is an endangered primate with its distribution restricted between river Manas and Sonkosh, on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra in Assam, including Chakrasila wildlife sanctuary, and certain parts of Bhutan.
