Seven arrested for party brawl

Bhubaneswar, Jan. 1: Police today arrested five Utkal University students and two others in connection with a brawl between two groups on the varsity campus during the New Year celebrations last night.

Law students Abinash Singh and Hardeep Sahu, personnel management and industrial relations students Soumya Sundar Parida and Soumya Ranjan Mohanty and journalism student Jyoti Ranjan Sahu were arrested. The two outsiders have been identified as Deepak Bhol and Prithwiraj Dalbehera.

The police said the brawl started following a heated argument between two groups.

"We have registered two cases on the basis of complaints filed by members of both the groups. We have also deployed our men on the campus to prevent any untoward incident," said a police officer.

In another case, the police have detained two persons from a well-known hotel at Saheed Nagar during the New Year celebrations last night. Tension erupted after a group of youths entered into a heated argument with the hotel authorities alleging mismanagement of an entertainment event that was being held on the occasion. The arrested youths also allegedly had a scuffle with the police.

Several road accidents were also reported from Bhubaneswar during the New Year celebrations last night, leaving more than 20 people injured. The cops said that most of the accidents resulted from drink driving. Around 50 drivers have been penalised for drink driving.

"A total of 19 senior officers were assigned to ensure road safety in the city during the New Year celebrations," said a senior police officer.

Robbers arrested

The police busted a gang of dacoits and arrested seven persons from Sundarpada on the city outskirts last night. The cops have seized three firearms, seven rounds of live ammunition, country-made bombs and sharp weapons from the accused.
