Cop fight kills cow runner

Kurukshetra, Nov. 29 (PTI): An alleged cow smuggler was killed and another injured in a gunfight with Haryana police near Thanesar town in the early hours today, police said.

Abid, 27, and Ashraf, 28, had fired on the policemen who had challenged them, damaging their vehicle but injuring none, Kurukshetra superintendent of police Simardeep Singh said.

Abid died when the cops fired back and Ashraf was injured, Singh said. He alleged that two cows and two bulls had been found in the alleged smugglers' vehicle.

A country-made revolver, four bullets and a mobile phone have been seized, Singh said. He said eight cases of cattle smuggling had been registered against the duo in the past.

Sources said three other smugglers had escaped under the cover of darkness.

A mini-truck carrying 14 animals, mostly cows and bulls, overturned near Umri, 8km from here, when the police and members of a cow protection group chased it. Singh said the alleged smugglers escaped.

Haryana's BJP government has passed laws banning cow slaughter and transport to other states for sale.
