Homeguards killed in accident

Shillong, June 11: Four Meghalaya homeguards died today in a village in Ri Bhoi district when the truck they were travelling in overturned.

According to police, a truck belonging to the homeguards (ML01 5625), was being driven by N. Pariong. The vehicle was returning to Shillong when it turned turtle on a kutcha road at Mawrong village in Ri Bhoi under Umsning outpost. Mawrong is around 50km from here.

Four homeguards - Mohon Rabha, Shankar Chettri, Bitterly Syrling and Hemol Sangma - died on the spot, while six others were injured.

The truck was carrying firewood for the border wing of the home guards battalion whose mess is located at Mawdiangdiang on the outskirts of this city.

The injured were admitted to Nongpoh civil hospital. Nongpoh is the headquarters of Ri Bhoi district.
