NBMCH no to blood donation camp

Siliguri, April 17: The members of the Medical Service Centre (MSC) - a voluntary organisation of doctors - today submitted a memorandum to Sabyasachi Das, #the superintendent of North Bengal Medical College and Hospital, as they were denied permission to hold a blood donation camp on the institution's premises.

The doctors and medical students of MSC wanted to hold the blood donation camp to replenish the dwindling blood stock at the Regional Blood Transfusion Centre which is at NBMCH.

Chandan Kumar Shit, a junior doctor at NBMCH, today said they had taken permission from RBTC on Wednesday to conduct the blood donation camp on April 18 where students and junior doctors of NBMCH and North Bengal Dental College and Hospital would donate blood.

According to Shit, Arunava Sarkar, the acting principal, yesterday informed them that the permission had been withheld because MSC is a political organisation and that they should not go forward with the camp, as the model code of conduct was in progress for the Siliguri Municipal Corporation polls, which is scheduled on April 25.

Shit, however, denied that the MSC had any political affiliations.

"The blood bank at the RBTC is facing a severe blood crisis for nearly two months now because few blood donation camps have been held. The reason is because of the board exams for class X and XII students which started in February and then local people got engaged in campaigning for the civic polls."

"At present, the blood stock at the RBTC has dropped to less than 50 units. We had secured permission to hold a blood donation camp from RBTC on Wednesday under the banner of MSC. But the acting principal told us yesterday that the permission has been withheld because MSC is a political organisation," said Shit, who is also the treasurer of the MSC's NBMCH unit.

The MSC members said they would start an agitation if the permission for the camp was not granted.

"We submitted a memorandum to the NBMCH superintendent today, demanding that permission should be granted for the camp. It is undemocratic to prevent us from holding the camp on such flimsy grounds. If they do not grant us permission, we will start agitations like sit-in-demonstrations and rallies on the NBMCH campus," said Shit.

NBMCH sources said permission had been withheld because most of the members of the MSC belonged to the All India Democratic Student's Organisation - the students' wing of SUCI.

"The members claim MSC is a voluntary organisation but most of its members are AIDSO supporters. So, NBMCH authorities denied them permission to prevent any trouble," a source at NBMCH said.

NBMCH officials denied the allegation made by the students and doctors.

"The election to the students' union of NBMCH on April 17 was cancelled because the model code of conduct is in progress. We did not want the students and doctors to organise camps under the banner of MSC in order to avoid any legal hassle because of the model code of conduct. If they want to conduct the camp, they will have to do it under the banner of students and doctors of NBMCH and NBDCH," said Arunava Sarkar, the acting principal.
