Inquiry into firing

Siliguri, Sept. 4: The Siliguri metropolitan police today ordered a departmental inquiry into the firing in which two constables were injured in a patrol jeep here last night.

The injured constables, Tashi Sherpa and Karlos Oraon, have been admitted to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital and are in stable condition.

According to sources, Sherpa had fired a shot that hit Oraon on the armpit. “Sherpa fired more rounds and to stop him, Manas Chanda, another constable, opened fire. The bullet hit Sherpa on the leg,” said a source. The incident took place at Tinbatti More around 10.30pm.

Jag Mohan, the commissioner of Siliguri metropolitan police, said this afternoon: “I have ordered a departmental inquiry to find out how the firing took place and who were involved in it. The role of other policemen who were on duty would be looked into. We have come to know that at least 10 rounds of bullets were fired.”
