New app-a-cab rolls in

First Uber, next Bookmycab — it could never get better than this in a city regularly held hostage by its rickety fleet of yellow cabs!

Bookmycab will be the newest app-a-cab service to hit town from Thursday.

It offers both AC and non-AC cars, equipped with “live location tracking system”, and allows people to book a ride over the telephone (033-41234567), on its website ( or through an app on a smartphone or tablet.

The start-up, already running successfully in Mumbai, has plans to launch in Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalore but its choice to come to Calcutta before the other cities was probably prompted by the taxi trouble in the city where residents were desperately looking for alternatives.

In fact, Uber had tasted unprecedented success since the international app-based service launched in the city on August 19.

Bookmycab has decided to offer competitive fares — Rs 15 a km for point-to-point trips in non-AC cars within the city with a minimum fare of Rs 160 for the first 8km with luggage charge of Rs 10 “for big bags”.

People can avail themselves of fixed rates, starting from Rs 200, for trips to and from the airport, railway stations and outside the city limits. Night surcharge of 20 per cent above the regular fare is applicable between 10.30pm and 4.30am.

For AC cars, Rs 20 a km will be charged within the city limits with a minimum fare of Rs 200 for the first 8km.

Luggage and night charge remain the same for both AC and non-AC cars.

Bookmycab allows advance booking for airport and railway station drops.

Its non-AC fleet in Calcutta has Ambassador and Tata Indica cars while the AC service has a wider range — Maruti Swift Dzire, Tata Indigo, Indica and Manza, and Toyota Etios.

The website says: “The nearest taxi will be assigned and requests for specific models will not be considered.”

Using the app, one can select a pickup location on the map or enter it in the location box. Similarly, he or she will have to select the destination on the map or type it in the destination box.

Other necessary inputs required from a passenger are: pickup time, AC or non-AC taxi, mobile number and email address.
