Twin titles for Bornali & Hirakjyoti

Guwahati, Aug. 25: Dibrugarh shuttlers Hirakjyoti and Bornali Konwar annexed double crowns in the 62nd Yonex Sunrise All-Assam Inter-district and Open badminton championship that concluded at Sivasagar late last evening.

Neog and Konwar won the men’s and women’s singles and doubles titles in the six-day meet. Neog lifted the singles title, defeating local lad Anjan Buragohain 21-18, 21-15 and partnered Dibyajyoti Bora (Dibrugarh) to win the doubles title beating Buragohain and Anshuman Hazarika of Guwahati 21-17, 21-14.

Konwar beat Guwahati girl Harshita Chaliha 21-9, 22-20 for the singles title and teamed up with Rimi Hazarika of Guwahati to win the doubles crown, defeating the Dibrugarh pair of Abantika Deka and Ningshi Block Hazarika 21-19, 21-12.

Dhemaji boy Jayraj Pegu walked away with four titles, including the under-17 boys’ singles, defeating Pragyanjyoti Gogoi of Nagaon 22-20, 19-21, 25-23. He also won the under-15, under-17 and under-19 boys’ doubles titles. For the under-15 title, he partnered Abhishek Bora of Digboi to beat Iman Sonowal (Tinsukia) and Farhaz Hussain (Guwahati) 27-25, 21-14 and partnered Saurav Das of Guwahati to defeat the same tandem of Sonowal and Hussain 21-14, 21-11 for the under-17 title.

In the under-19 event, Jayraj and Saurav got the better of Nagaon’s Rajsekhar Das and Pragyanjyoti Gogoi 21-19, 21-19. Dibrugarh boys Tuhin Konwar and Dixit Gogoi overcame Dibrugarh’s Tuhin Chetia and Hrishav Baruah 21-16, 16-21, 21-17 for the under-13 boys’ doubles title. Rishav Sarma and Megha Morchana Bora of Guwahati won the under-19 boys’ and girls’ singles titles respectively.

Sarma beat Deepjyoti Dutta (Guwahati) 21-16, 21-9 and Bora prevailed over Ankita Rajkhowa of Guwahati 22-20, 21-19 in the finals.

In under-17 girls’ singles, Ashmita Chaliha (Guwahati) got the better of Ankita Rajkhowa 21-19, 21-16 in the final.

Other results: Under-15 boys’ singles — Orijit Chaliha (Guwahati) beat Rituparna Bora (Guwahati) 23-21, 21-13; Under-15 girls’ singles — Chimran Kalita (Guwahati) beat Suzen Burhagohain 21-17, 21-10; Under-13 boys’ singles — Tuhin Chetia (Dibrugarh) beat Jyotishman Choudhury (Tezpur) 21-14, 21-17; Under-13 girls’ singles — Suzen Burhagohain (Guwahati) beat Shibangi Baishya (Golaghat) 21-14, 17-21, 21-16; Under-10 boys’ singles – Himanish Sekhar Das (Guwahati) beat Anurag Talukdar (Guwahati) 19-21, 21-18, 21-17; Under-10 girls’ singles — Disha Sarma (Guwahati) beat Ankita Gogoi (Lakhimpur) 21-10, 19-21, 21-18.
